The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) is a society registered under Act XXI of 1860 and the corresponding State Act viz. the West Bengal State Registration Act 1961, with its headquarters at 2A & 2B, Raja S. C. Mallick Road, Calcutta - 700 032, West Bengal, India. It has a Governing Council with a number of members elected or nominated and the Registrar as its Non-Member Secretary. The Council has the functions, duties and power as envisaged in the Memorandum and Bye Laws and as per the provisions of the relevant Act.
IACS is conducting a de novo five year Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s Program in Science for highly motivated students who have passed (10+2) Level Examination in science stream. The objective of this program is to provide high-quality education, research, and training in science. Through this special program, undergraduate teaching is integrated with modern research in all major Schools of the Institute. The first three semesters of the program will comprise foundational courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science and Biology. From the fourth semester onward the students will choose one discipline (from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science) as majors, subject to fulfilling eligibility criteria and availability of seats in the respective Schools. From ninth semester the students will be directly exposed to research.
Applications for Integrated Bachelor’s-Master’s and Master’s/Integrated Master’s - Ph.D. Program are to be made online. The online application portal will be live on February 24, 2020. There is a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 1200 (Rs. 600 for SC/ST and PD candidates only).
COURSES OFFERED
- Admission to the Integrated Bachelor’s - Master’s Program in Science - 2020
- Candidates qualified in 10+2 board examination with a minimum first division/60% marks or equivalent grade in both 10 & 10+2 level exams are eligible to apply for admission to this Program (55% marks or equivalent in 10 & 10+2 levels for the reserved category candidates). Those who have appeared in the 10+2 board examination may also apply but their final selection will be subject to securing the required percentage of marks in the qualifying examination.
- Eligible applicants will be required to appear in a UG Pre-Interview Screening Test (UPST). UPST-2020 will be conducted in a fully computer-based test mode on April 18, 2020 in various cities across India based on multiple choice questions in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and one out of Computer Science or Biological Science. The shortlisted candidates will be called for interview, out of which a maximum of sixty (60) candidates will be selected for the Program as will be declared in IACS website.
- KVPY Fellow and students securing a JEE Mains 2020 or NEET 2020 rank up to top 8000 may be eligible for direct interview, depending on their rank and other screening criteria; however, the number of candidates selected through this route will be a maximum of 10. Admitted students entering into the fourth year may be eligible to receive monthly stipend, following the institute norms. Admission under the reserved categories, including EWS will be as per rule.
- Admission to the Master’s / Integrated Master’s - Ph.D. Program in Science - 2020
- Candidates having Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering with a minimum first division in both 10 & 10+2 levels and a minimum first class (60% marks or equivalent) in Bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply (55% marks or equivalent in 10, 10+2 levels and Bachelor’s degree for the reserved category candidates). Those who have appeared in the Final Bachelor’s degree examination may also apply but their final selection will be subject to securing the required percentage of marks in the qualifying examination.
- Candidates having Engineering background and opting for School of Mathematical & Computational Sciences should have adequate training in Mathematical, Computer and Computational Methods. Eligible applicants will be required to appear for a Master’s Pre-Interview Screening Test (MPST).
- Admission to Ph.D. Program in Autumn Semester of 2020
- Applications are invited from highly motivated Indian Nationals having strong flair in research obtaining 55% or equivalent in Master’s (50% for the reserved category) and qualified in UGC-NET/CSIR-NET/GATE/JEST/equivalent national level examination in the prescribed form available in the website
